On Monday 6th March 28 children were treated to a visit to listen to the author Francesca Simon, author of the Horrid Henry books. We were delighted by her stories and enjoyed listening to her read her books. Some lucky children even got to meet her, when they got their books signed. Additionally Alina attended the festival venue and met Francesca too, even being interviewed about her thoughts! Toyota are running a fantastic art competition for schools to enter. On Monday, 8 children represented JPS in the Primary Round of the Reader’s cup, in this year’s Emirates Literature Festival. Our teams were competing against 20 other teams from schools across Jumeirah, in this first round, where competition is fierce with numerous teams across the UAE competing for a coveted place in the final.
The children worked very hard, reading the chosen books multiple times to answer the variety of questions posed, that were testing their recall skills. We are eagerly awaiting the results which will be announced end of January. Well done to Jad Oklany, Veda Fernandes, Malaika Hassan, Annanya Siraj, Alexandra Hide, Amaan Zaidi, Eleftheria Sermpetis, and Ayaan Sharif. Special mention also to Himakshi Shastri and Sabeen Shariff, who both worked hard as reserves, but on this occasion were not required on the day. At the end of last term, 9 students were involved in the International final of a Brainways event. The students had all qualified following a regional round held earlier in the term. The standard of the final was extremely challenging, with students studying areas of Humanities, Mathematics and Science. The teams comprised of Himakshi Shastri, Veda Fernandes and Anushka Dhawan ( Y6 Team 1), Malaika Hassan, Salma Reda and Rabab Tariq ( Y6Team 2) and Joshua Garvey, Niki Sermpeti and Ryka Gehi (Y3 ) We are thrilled to announce that the Year 3 team came 1st in Maths, 3rd in Science 6th in Humanities and 3rd overall. The Year 6 team 1 achieved 4th in Science, 6th in Maths and Humanities and were 7th overall and the year 6 team 2 were and incredible 2nd in Humanities, 4th in Maths and 5th on Science and overall. This was a marvelous achievement by all students, very well done to you all. The long awaited day arrived – Friday December 9th, the Primary World Scholar’s Cup (WSC) event that 33 children from Year 6 attended, most of whom had been preparing for this day since the end of Year 5.
The day began with a welcome and introduction to the alpacas (the WSC mascot and much coveted soft toy). Following songs, screaming and balancing alpacas on heads, the serious part of the day began. The students began by writing essays about their views on (amongst other things), whether it should be against the law for parents to ground their children and if women or children should be treated first in an epidemic. Then it was the Scholar’s Challenge, an individual round, where questions asked included “What is a zoonotic disease?” and “What does genetic testing primarily examine?” After lunch, all teams had 3 debates on the motions; “Stupidity is a disease” “States managed by children would be less likely to fail” and “That criminals should be sent to another planet” After a further interactive quiz and a talent show, where many JPS students performed, the results were announced. This was the 15th time JPS had participated and we achieved the best results ever! Too numerous to mention, all are posted on the World scholar’s website, well done to all 33 students. Internet increases crime.
It is the duty of other states to save failed states. In the future, computers will replace teachers. These are examples of some of the topics that 16 teams from 8 schools, debated at The Mini enrichment league’s Debate challenge for Year 5/6, at Royal Dubai School on 5th December. Our two teams comprising of Nils Giard, Danyaal Zobairi, Zack Farias and Veda Fernandes, Himakshi Shastri, Imogen O’Connor, won all their debates to come first and third respectively. A big congratulations to all the participants for their hard work and dedication in preparing for the event. |
